artist’s statement

I have become increasingly inspired by the colour, light, and textures that make up the coast and ocean here in Maine. Watching the ocean, the patterns the waves and ripples make are like lace on silk. On a calm evening the water can look like a mosaic, small glittering chips of glass---that change from vivid blues and turquoise to black and silver to pink and gold.

The rocks, the tide pools with mussels, whelks, and seaweed clinging to the sides and bottom create a natural tapestry of shapes and texture that so smoothly translate into a design on silk or velvet.

I like to experiment and to combine hand painting with silk screen printing and dyeing. Some of my work is purely hand painted and some ( especially my velvet pieces ) are hand dyed then painted or printed with discharge dyes ( that replace the original colour with a new colour ). Sometimes I add metallic gutta and more dye by hand to create texture.I also experiment with devore ( burn out ) on velvet either hand printed and hand dyed or drawn on by hand using applicator bottles.

These are techniques I learned years ago at art college in London and it is always enjoyable and rewarding to rediscover and use them in new ways here and now.

Recently I also rediscovered an interest in flora & floral design through my love of Van Goghs wonderful swirly sunflowers and irises and his vibrant golds and blues. These colours are very prevalent in the landscape and gardens of Maine during the summer. An interesting discovery and another opening for new inspiration.

My work is on different types of silk---chiffon, habotai, satin silk, and on clothing--camisoles, shirts, scarves, sarongs, and wraps. It is good to see how my ideas and designs lend themselves to different forms of apparel.
